Brilla Como El Sol (Shine Like the Sun)

Today I went to sub in a school that has a dual emersion program for students to speak both Spanish and English. I don't speak Spanish and I walked into the class and saw a huge sun on the wall with "Brilla Como El Sol" written in the middle. I asked a student what it meant and she said "Shine like the sun." On each of their desks it said "brilla" or shine by their names. On the class door it said brilla and they had all colored little suns with their names. These students were fourth graders and from what I saw they really did shine. What does it mean to shine like the sun? I believe it means to allow God to show his light through us in a variety of ways: in our thoughts, actions, words, and deeds. God can only work through those that are doing good because God is Love and love is not unkind , angry, or disrespectful. The class of students I had today showed caring to me and others, peacefulness, and respect to their own peers as well as teachers as normally expected. To witness light in a world that can seem so dark sometimes was a breath of fresh air. Ask yourself if God is shining out to others from your soul right now? He wants to, but are you allowing Him to?

During my lunch break in this class today I wrote the following poem. It was inspired by the respect I had for the school's commitment to allowing the students to not only learn English as a second language, but also maintain their own heritage and native language...

BE TRUE

Don't lose what you know as you grow;

Why put on a show, for people you don't know?

What you're given from the start;

Is part of your soul and heart.

Guard your traditions;

Just put on some additions.

When we add we grow bigger;

When we subtract all we get is a slimmer figure.

Stay connected with the roots you were born with;

You'll see they are all part of your gift.

Who put you where you are?
